Updated January 14
Next steps by the Conference following work with the consultant January 12:
A new recommendation was put forward by the consultant. I am posting this with permission. Under this recommendation, DHC would remain in minimal operation or closure for 2-3 years while sites are master planned. In 2015 or 2016, it would be reopened with new cabins and dining. This is currently ONLY a recommendat...ion. Thank you for your love and prayers of DHC and camping in general.
This is not truly a time to celebrate. Remain humble, for in doing this, the recommendation also incorporates shutting down Kingswood, Star Lake, and the summer camp program of Koronis. This does not change the impact of taking over half of the land of the camping program OUT of the program. Koronis would serve as a conference center, Northern Pines and DHC would be the summer programs, and KoWaKan would serve deep wilderness and BWCA camping.
Our hope is that, assuming this recommendation goes forward, that Kingswood, Star Lake, and the Camp Koronis lands are able to step through a door into a new chapter, that is respectful to the land, the legacy, and the neighbors of those lands. Whatever happens must not hurt the memories of people who have been part of those ministries.
And, most importantly that all the changes that need to happen to strengthen the UMC Camping Ministry here in Minnesota happen, and we never have to go through this pain again.
